Slovak coin 5 EUR 2024 - Maned Bison snad

Another issue from the series of commemorative euro coins dedicated to Slovak fauna and flora commemorates the European bison.
The bison is the largest wild ruminant in Europe. A male can be 3 metres long, 2 metres high and weigh over 1 tonne. These majestic tours have lived across the continent for thousands of years, but as human civilisation spread, they began to decline. Fortunately, a few animals survived in captivity when they were extinct in the wild. Thanks to a noble international effort, their numbers then began to grow again and bison gradually returned to a number of countries. Slovakia is one of them. It is said that the last wild bison in Slovakia was shot by King Matthias Corvinus. The fact that bison occured here in the past is still evidenced by the names of many villages - Zuberec, Zubrohlava or Zubrá. Today you can meet these giants in the zoo, but also in the Poloniny National Park. Although bisons command respect, you don't have to be afraid of them - just keep calm, keep a polite distance and you will have an experience of a lifetime...
The reverse side of the coin, designed by the medal maker Karol Ličko, is dominated by a detail of the head of a male bison. Its habitat, the beech forest in Eastern Slovakia, is represented by a beech branch. The texts show the Slovak and Latin names of the species: ZUBOR HRIVNATÝ – BISON BONASUS. The obverse side of the coin presents a walking bison and a natural scenery. The relief of the coin also features the Slovak national emblem, the inscription SLOVENSKO (SLOVAKIA), the year of issue 2024 and the nominal value of 5 EURO.
The commemorative base metal coin was minted by the Mincovňa Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
