The beauty of the Danube Floodplain Protected Landscape Area is shown by a Slovak silver euro coin, which was minted in quality proof.
The Danube Lowlands in southwestern Slovakia have been home to the Danube Floodplain Protected Landscape Area since 1998. It covers an area of 122.84 km² and due to the discontinuous occurrence of protected ecosystems, consists of five separate parts situated from Bratislava to Velkolelský Island in the district of Komárno near the Hungarian border. The area is unique thanks to the combination of the natural environment of the great river and artificial waterworks – especially Gabčíkovo, whose construction significantly affected the natural flood zone of the Danube. As the name of the PLA suggests, there are numerous floodplain forests in the area, which are a refuge for a wide range of moisture-loving flora and fauna. Various wetlands, lakes, ponds, and side and blind arms of rivers abound with a wealth of waterfowl.
Waterfowl are featured on the reverse side of the coin, which is the work of medal maker Karol Lička. The relief features a little egret and a kingfisher. The obverse side depicts a scene from the Danube floodplain forest. While the upper part features a beaver, the lower part shows two typical representatives of Danube fish – a carp and a sturgeon. The relief of the coin is supplemented with the Slovak national emblem, the nominal value of 20 EURO, and the texts CHRÁNENÁ KRAJINNÁ OBLASŤ DUNAJSKÉ LUHY, SLOVENSKO, 2025.
The coin was minted by the Kremnica Mint and issued by the National Bank of Slovakia.
