Product description

The twentieth silver medal of the Czech Mint weighing one kilogram, issued as part of the cycle dedicated to our statutory towns,  represents Ústí nad Labem.

The landscape between the Bohemian Central Highlands and the Ore Mountains has an exceptional charm. There are cones of long-extinct volcanoes and numerous cascades and waterfalls formed by streams converging on the Elbe. Right at the confluence of the most powerful Czech river and the Bílina lies Ústí nad Labem. Its strategic location has made it a key transport hub. The earliest written records mention a customs house here, which controlled the Elbe trade for the Czech rulers. The life of the town was connected with water in the following centuries. The Elbe's freight traffic was crucial for Central Europe - for example, it is only 66 kilometres from Ústí to Dresden in Germany - and at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the Czech town became the largest Austro-Hungarian port. The development of Ústí nad Labem was also closely linked to the development of industrial production. The advantageous location with excellent access to transport routes was fully exploited in the chemical and food industries. The names of Spolchemie and Setuza speak for themselves. Today, the statutory town, which has become famous for its industry, is an important cultural, sports, business and university centre.

The medal maker Štěpánka Doležalová placed the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Ústí nad Labem, famous for its leaning tower, on the obverse side of the medal. The composition of the obverse side is completed by an elaborate aerial view of the town and the river that flows through it. The reverse side of the medal then bears a map of the Czech Republic with its statutory towns marked.

It is not only the weight of the one-kilogram mintage that is impressive, but also its mintage - only 24 numbered pieces will be produced and placed in a luxurious wooden case.
