Kladno is the eighteenth statutory city to appear on the Czech Mint's medals minted from one half kilogram of pure silver.
Kladno used to be an ordinary agricultural village, but in the middle of the 19th century, deposits of coal and iron ore were discovered in its surroundings. This was followed by rapid development. Kladno grew rapidly - in population, size, importance and reputation - and became a key industrial centre of Bohemia and the entire Habsburg monarchy. After the railway was built, the first mine was opened here. Kladno was made a town in 1870 and it became home to the Poldi steelworks in 1889, whose steel made it famous throughout the world. The following 20th century was marked by a successful but also insensitive expansion of metallurgical and heavy industry. By the end of the millennium, however, the character of the largest city in the Central Bohemian region began to change significantly. Coal mining ceased, metallurgical production was reduced and the newly emerging enterprises were closer to light industry. “Černé Kladno“, whose environment had long suffered, became a green statutory town full of nature, sport and music…
The obverse side of the medal, which is the work of the medal maker Štěpánka Doležalová, is dominated by the neo-Renaissance building of the Kladno Town Hall built at the end of the 19th century. A detailed aerial view of the city centre completes the composition of the obverse side. The reverse side of the medal bears a map of the Czech Republic with marked statutory towns.
In total, only 48 half-kilo medals will be produced - each specimen is hand-numbered on the edge and stored in a luxurious wooden case.
