Universal Gods

Universal Gods

The Czech Mint pays tribute to the fourth ancient god Quetzalcóatl, worshiped by the original inhabitants of Central America, by issuance of the silver coin.

The "feathered snake", whom the Aztecs called Quetzalcoatl and the Maya Kukulkan, is the supreme Mesoamerican god, creator of the world and human civilization
. It is considered good unlike most Aztec supernatural beings – it oversees science, the arts, trade, crafts, and agriculture - but it still demands bloody human sacrifices. It rules the winds and brought humanity not only a calendar and books, but also corn and chocolate. Quetzalcóatl has many forms - sometimes it is depicted as a dragon or a white man. It is said that when the infamous Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés began to subdue Central America, the Aztecs did not resist him because he was strikingly similar to their supreme deity, described in ancient prophecies - he had white skin, was bearded, came from the East and his cannons and rifles were ruled by supernatural power…

The reverse side of the coin, which was processed by
Roman Shamilyan and Stefan Shamilyan (son and father), presents a snake's head with a feathered collar inspired by a historic stone sculpture that adorns the Quetzalcóatl Temple in Teotihuacán, Mexico. The mask is surrounded by decorative ornaments, together with the inscription QUETZALCOATL. You will also find characteristic Aztec iconography on the obverse side of the coin, where it is supplemented with ornaments of Greek, Nordic, Slavic and Egyptian origin. The obverse side is common to the entire cycle of divine coins. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued under license by a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, the obverse side still bears its necessary elements - a nominal value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD), the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. and the year of issue 2020.

The great gods of the world are immortalized on large coins - each weighing
five troy ounces.
