The fifth silver coin from the Czech Mint's series entitled Human Body is dedicated to the urinary system, specifically the kidneys.
The urinary and reproductive systems are closely linked by their common development, but their functions differ significantly. While the reproductive system is responsible for reproduction, i.e. the transfer of genetic information from parents to offspring, the urinary system's task is to remove waste products from the body that are produced during the conversion of substances into nutrients. The kidneys are responsible for maintaining the stability of the internal environment and removing harmful substances that are excreted into the external environment in the form of urine. Every minute, around 1 litre of blood flows through them, and the kidneys of an adult human filter up to 2,000 litres per day. The volume of urine we excrete per day is approximately 1.5 litres.
The reverse side of the coin, designed by medal maker Jan Štekl, DiS., features a coloured pair of human kidneys, one of which has been cut open to reveal its internal structure. The composition is supplemented with the Latin inscription RENES (kidneys). The obverse side, which is common to the entire series, features a coloured double helix DNA. Since the coins from the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, they also bear the island's national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2025.
