The first silver coin of the Czech Mint from the new series Cat Breeds is dedicated to the British shorthair cat.
The breed, whose history dates back to the 19th century in Great Britain, was bred by crossing Persian cats with domestic shorthaired cats, which were characterised by their massive build. The compact and robust beast looks stocky. It has a well-muscled body that is carried by short but strong legs. The large eyes - round and deep - and the small ears set far apart are striking on the broad head. Thick, soft fur that gives a plush impression makes the British cat look like royalty - the iconic colour is blue, but there are many other variations. The British cat is one of the more comfortable breeds that is not into wandering. One of her favourite activities is lounging. She is calm and friendly, and enjoys cuddling but does not impose.
The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker David Kružliak, bears two depictions of the British cat. The first one is coloured, thus making the blue coat stand out. The second, which is embossed, presents a cat sleeping contentedly. The composition is supplemented with the Czech-English inscription BRITSKÁ KRÁTKOSRSTÁ KOČKA – BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT. On the obverse side, which is common to the whole series, you will find a silhouette of a cat and paw prints. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its national emblem, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2024.
