The Chinese zodiac, also known as the Eastern zodiac, consists of twelve signs – twelve animals representing twelve temperaments with both positive and negative traits. Unlike the classic horoscope we are used to in Europe, each of these signs belongs to an entire year, and once all the animals have taken their turn, the twelve-year cycle begins anew. The year 2026 is ruled by the horse, which is featured on a silver coin from the British Royal Mint.
Horses are held in high esteem by the English. After all, England gave the world the thoroughbred, a breed that has become synonymous with speed and elegance and dominates the racetracks. Alongside it, the British Isles also gave birth to the Shire horse – a majestic giant that is one of the most powerful draft breeds in the world and is used in the fields and in breweries. Nor can we forget the Shetland pony – a small but hardy horse that worked alongside miners in the mines and is now extremely popular with children. The reverse side of the coin, which represents the symbiosis between British and Chinese traditions, is dominated by an English thoroughbred on stone pavement in front of stables from the early 18th century. The composition is completed by the English inscription YEAR OF THE HORSE and the corresponding Chinese character. The obverse side of the coin features the attributes of the issuer – i.e. the nominal value of 2 POUNDS (GBP), a portrait of King Charles III, the text "CHARLES III D G REX F D" (Charles III, by the grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith) and the year of issue 2026.
