The Great Wave off Kanagawa, one of the most famous works of art in the world, is commemorated by a silver coin from CIT Coin Invest.
In 1831, the Japanese woodblock artist Katsushika Hokusai created a remarkable work titled “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”. The color woodblock print from the series “36 Views of Mount Fuji” captures a dramatic moment: A massive, foaming wave looms menacingly over tiny fishing boats, while in the distance, the silhouette of Mount Fuji stands calm and motionless. The artist’s technical skill is undeniable, and the composition—with its unusual cropping of the scene—is bold, but what continues to captivate viewers even after two centuries is the masterful depiction of the transience of time—the moment just before the water mass crashes down. What makes this contrasting scene so compelling? Perhaps the courage of a man who is small and vulnerable in the face of nature, and yet repeatedly ventures out to meet it… The Great Wave brought Japanese art to worldwide fame and simultaneously became a symbol of the meeting of East and West. Its creator used the unmistakable Prussian blue, which reached Japan after centuries the island nation had spent in isolation from the rest of the world. In Europe, the painting inspired both the Impressionists and Art Nouveau artists.
A Japanese woodblock print served as the inspiration for the reverse side of the coin, which is dominated by a polished wave emerging from an obsidian-black background. Since the coin is issued under license from the Cook Islands, the obverse side bears a portrait of King Charles III and the noninal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD).
The mintage consists of 999 pieces placed in an elegant frame, in which you can display the coin.
