Product description

A set of two silver commemorative medals was created on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Slovak national revivalist Janek Kráľ.

Janko Kráľ
was one of the most important, most radical and also most courageous poets of the Štúr generation. Together with Ľudovít Štúr, whom he fully supported, he tried to raise the Slovak spirit. He was convinced that the best way is to educate the people, who needed to be made aware of their own history, culture and potential. He began with epic poems with historical themes, but gradually built on Slovak folk literature. He did not hesitate to stir up the people and urged them not to be afraid to fight for their rights. He was repeatedly arrested, imprisoned and sentenced to death for his tireless organisation of rebellion against Hungarian rule in the revolutionary years of 1848 and 1849, but was eventually pardoned...

A pair of medals based on unrealised designs of Slovak commemorative coins were minted by the Slovak Mint of
Mincovňa Kremnica.
