Product description

Gold medal Karel Hynek Mácha proof

The medal was issued on the occasion of 200th anniversary of the birth of Karel Hynek Mácha, one of the most prominent Czech poets, a major representative of Czech Romanticism. He died very young and his literary work is not large. The most significant and valued is his lyrical epic poem Máj (May) consisting of opening verses, four cantos and two intermezzos. The poem is a homage to the beauty of spring nature and tribute to love. As a dramatic poem it has a cast of characters: Vilém, a bandit, in love with Jarmila, who is in love with Vilém but was dishonoured by Vilém's father; and Hynek, the narrator.

The obverse side features a stylized portrait of Karel Hynek Mácha, with years 1810 – 2010 in the circumscription and the poet’s name in two lines below the portrait.

The reverse side features a moon and a singing nightingale and a rose below. The name of the author is in the circumscription.

The medal was designed by Jiří Harcuba.
