Product description

Another gold mini-coin from the Czech Mint, set within a replica of a historical postcard featuring a Slovak motif, commemorates Bojnice Castle.

The Travertine Mound in the Ponitří region was inhabited as early as prehistoric times. A Great Moravian fortified settlement once stood on the same site, followed by a wooden castle; after the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, a stone castle was built here, serving as the administrative center of the royal estate. Throughout history, it faced numerous attacks—it withstood the Hussites but succumbed to Rákóczi’s uprising. Its owners changed frequently—among them was, for example, the most powerful man and uncrowned king of Slovakia, Matúš Čák Trenčanský. The Thurz family had the Gothic castle rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Under the Pálffys, it was first transformed into a BaroqueB and eventually into a Neo-Gothic castle. In 1939, the fairy-tale-like building was purchased by the BataB company, and after 1945 it was nationalized. Today, Bojnice Castle is one of the oldest, most significant, and most visited monuments in Slovakia. Its significance is also reflected in postcard art—the historical postcard that served as the model for the coin’s packaging depicts the castle as it appeared at the beginning of the 20th century.

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medalist Lucie Kroupová, DiS., features a view of Bojnice Castle in all its splendor. Since the coin is issued by the Czech Mint under license from a foreign issuer, the island of Niue, the obverse side bears its attributes - the name and portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.

This issue, which will delight both numismatists and philatelists, represents an original and affordable collector’s item as well as an attractive regional gift.
