Product description

The coronation of the Hungarian kings in Bratislava - this is the theme of the third Ducat series of the Czech Mint in 2023, which was created for Slovak collectors and investors. The gold five-ducat features not only King Leopold I, but also a scene from the third part of the coronation act.

Leopold I was not supposed to be a monarch. His older brother Ferdinand IV was originally crowned king. However, he died during the lifetime of their father Ferdinand III. Leopold was only fifteen years old in the year of his coronation in 1655. He became the real monarch after his father's death in 1657. During his long reign, the Christian armies were victorious over the Turks and the Hungarian territory was liberated. The Hungarian Diet then expressed its gratitude by passing a law on the right of inheritance of Leopold's descendants to the Hungarian crown.

"After the coronation and the knighting of the knights, the new king had to take the oath in public. A high wooden podium was erected in front of the city gate, on which he repeated the Latin oath read by the archbishop," explains Slovak historian Štefan Holčík, an expert on Bratislava's coronation festivities.

The medal maker Veronika Prokopová, DiS., dedicated the obverse side of the five-ducat to a portrait of King Leopold I. The additional motif is a scene from the coronation oath of the Hungarian monarch. The reverse side is dominated by the St. Stephen's crown.

The mintage of the gold coin weighing five ducats is only 100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the first Republican St. Wenceslas ducats.
